Cardiff City have continued their drive towards the Division Two play-offs by securing two new signings before the transfer deadline.

Ipswich full-back Gary Croft has joined on loan until the end of the season, while former Welsh international Ceri Hughes has signed a short-term deal.

Ceri Hughes was released by Portsmouth

Croft, 28, has just returned from a spell on loan at Wigan and will give manager Lennie Lawrence options on the flanks in the tension-packed run-in of the season.

Lawrence said: "Gary is a two-footed player who can play on either side of a back four, or as a wing-back.

The former Grimsby player achieved notority in 2000 when he was electronically tagged for a month after being released early from a prison sentence imposed for a driving offence.

Since then he has found he difficult to reclaim a first-team place at Portman Road.

The 31-year-old Hughes, who played eight times for Wales, was released by Portsmouth at part of their cost-cutting programme and has moved to Ninian Park initially for a month.

He was with Lawrence at Luton Town, but injuries restricted his career following moves to Wimbledon and Portsmouth.

His last international appearance came in 1997, when Wales lost 3-2 in Belgium.

The pair join Andy Campbell and Steven Bywater as new faces at Ninian Park, and Lawrence said the Bluebirds were ready for the final stages of the season.

"We have done as much as we can," he said. "The squad has been strengthened in the departments we wanted, and we'' have to wait and see."
