Cardiff City football club was formed in 1899 by Riverside cricket club as a way to keep the cricket players fit during the close season. They played their earliest matches at the cricket ground in Sophia Gardens. Three years later the club moved to a pitch at Roath. In 1902 the club disbanded but then started playing back at Sophia Gardens again in 1905. In 1906 the club tried to take the name Cardiff City, but were told by the F.A that they would have to keep that name for the first Cardiff team that went professional. This was the only incentive that Bartley Wilson the club secretary needed and he decided to go proffesional. The early years were very succesful for the club, they were division 2 runners up in 1920-21 and division 1 runners up in the 1923-24 season, however the biggest succeces came in the f.a cup, they lost in the final in 1925, and then went one step on that famous day in 1927 when they won the cup.
